Louisiana, a state brimming with history, culture, and natural beauty, has so much more to offer than just the lively streets of New Orleans. If you've only had the chance to explore New Orleans, you've barely scratched the surface of Louisiana's diverse and captivating tapestry! Beyond the city's vibrant energy, there lies a world of history, culture, and natural beauty just waiting to be discovered and cherished. I absolutely adore Louisiana; it's a place where even a simple stroll down the street can spark a conversation that makes you feel truly welcomed.

For all you history buffs out there, just like me, my daughter, and of course, my granddaughter, let me tell you, Louisiana is an absolute treasure trove of fascinating stories from the past. Picture yourself leisurely strolling down the grand oak-lined avenues of antebellum plantations like Melrose Plantation, Oak Alley, and Laura Plantation Creole owned by a person of color. It's like stepping back in time, where you can almost hear the whispers of history echoing through the air. And let me tell you, it speaks volumes to us! Oh, and don't forget to make your way up to Cane River Creole Historic National Park, where you can learn all about incredible individuals like Therese Coin Coin, a Free Person of Color. Now, let me tell you, Marie Thérèse Coincoin (also spelled Coincoin or Cocó) was one remarkable woman. Despite facing immense adversity as an enslaved African woman in 18th century colonial Louisiana, she rose above it all to become a successful businesswoman and matriarch. But hey, that's a story for another time. Stay tuned! Each plantation has its own unique tale to tell, from the intricate architecture to the lives of the people who once called them home. And let me tell you, the Cane River region is chock-full of Louisiana's most significant historical sites. So, make sure to explore Melrose, Oakland, and Magnolia Plantations to truly immerse yourself in the rich history of the Creole community, both free and enslaved, that shaped this incredible region.

If you're interested in exploring different cultures, like my family is, why not venture into Acadiana, the heart of Cajun Country? This amazing region, with its rich French Acadian heritage, offers a one-of-a-kind mix of traditions, music, and cuisine that you won't find anywhere else in the US. When you stroll through the streets of Lafayette, you'll notice that the city signs and streets are in both French and English, and you might even hear Louisiana French being spoken. It's a truly immersive experience! If you decide to visit, make sure to learn a few French phrases and let yourself be swept away by the infectious rhythms of Zydeco music. And of course, don't forget to indulge in the mouthwatering flavors of gumbo and crawfish étouffée. You'll also get to witness the vibrant spirit of the Cajun people. Oh, and be sure not to miss the charming town of Breaux Bridge, known as the "Crawfish Capital of the World," where you can fully immerse yourself in Cajun and Creole culture. Of you can't go to Breaux Bridge without making your way to Bayou Teche. Trust me, it's an adventure you won't want to miss!

Louisiana is home to some truly breathtaking natural landscapes. You won't believe the beauty of the mysterious swamps in the Atchafalaya Basin, which happens to be the largest swamp in the entire United States. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators (yes, they're a common sight in most bayous, and they're even a staple of the local cuisine!). You might also spot graceful herons and other fascinating wildlife. Oh, and did you know that the entrance to Acadiana is just over the Atchafalaya Causeway? It's a scenic drive from Baton Rouge that you won't want to miss. 18 miles to cross. Check out the Atchafalaya Welcome Center, halfway across. Speaking of drives, if you're a fan of kayaking like our family, you'll be thrilled to know that we always find a bayou to explore. And if you're up for more adventure, take a leisurely drive along the Creole Nature Trail. You'll be treated to a diverse range of ecosystems, from marshes and beaches to prairies and chenier ridges.

ur family's love affair with Louisiana began unexpectedly during a visit to New Orleans. As we stepped into a charming visitor store, a kind-hearted local gentleman greeted my granddaughter, Zee, with a warm smile. With a playful glimmer in his eye, he said, "You're Creole, darlin'. You belong here with your people." Those words touched our hearts deeply, as Zee, being of mixed race, had often felt like she didn't quite fit in elsewhere. From that moment, Louisiana became more than just a destination—it became our cherished home away from home. And let me tell you, we are currently on the lookout for our permanent residence here, and before you even ask, no, we won't be giving up our full-time RV adventures anytime soon. And let me tell you, no matter where you find yourself in Louisiana, you're bound to come across friendly locals who are more than eager to share their captivating stories and cherished traditions. Whether you're engaging in a lively conversation with a Cajun fisherman, savoring the culinary delights of a talented Creole chef, or exploring the rich history with a knowledgeable plantation tour guide or even a voodoo high priest, you'll develop a profound appreciation for the remarkable cultural heritage of this vibrant state.
